New Arrivals from Pierre Bourlier
In 2015 Pierre set up his modest domaine, deep in the hills of northern Ardèche, only a stone's throw from St Joseph. He previously spent time working with Gilles Azzoni and Domaine des Miquettes before branching out on his own, and now has 1.5 hectares of vines to which he is slowly adding.
Most of the vineyards lie on the steep sides of the Doux valley; they are a mix of 70-year-old vines of Gamay along with the more recent grafted plantings of Pinot Noir with small amounts of Ploussard, Pineau d'Aunis, Muscat, and more Gamay. The sandy granitic soils are supported by ancient stone-wall terracing and sit at about 400m elevation, high up in the hills, where the cool evenings preserve freshness after the heat of the day. He owns 2 horses which can just fit in between the terraces, and when the rows are too narrow he works by hand. Pierre prefers to spray as little as possible, but when required the emphasis is on biodynamic treatments, spraying tisanes and preparations to combat common diseases like mildew, rather than using copper and sulphur.
The results of this quite difficult vineyard work are wines that are elegant and perfumed, speaking of a rising star in the region. Even in hot vintages Pierre manages to find a wonderful balance in each cuvée. In recent years, when yields are down, he has started to harvest from biodynamic vineyards in Ardèche to create small amounts of négociant wines. This year, we are delighted to bring in one cuvée from his négociant range, alongside his two domaine wines. All three wines are a great snapshot of the 2024 vintage in the northern Ardèche, and we are extremely pleased to have Pierre’s wines back in stock.
The new releases are now available to drink in or take away at Cadet, or for home delivery on our website.
