The fruit here comes from a parcel of 70 year old vines in the sandy-clay soils of the Grille-Midi lieu-dit on the border of Chiroubles, an aptly named parcel that receives intense sun exposure, especially during the hottest times of day. The grapes were left to macerate in whole bunches for 3 weeks before being pressed off for 6 months of ageing in small, old barrels. A pale, cherry-red in the glass, its light colour and soft perfume might suggest something rather delicate, but tasting reveals a wine of real intensity with dark brambly fruit, minerals and earth. Drinking wonderfully now, this will only improve with time in the cellar.
